Why Spiders Keep Coming Back

Spiders settle where they can find insects to eat and sheltered places to rest. Exterior lights, cluttered storage and gaps around doors can support recurring activity. Removing an old web improves the appearance, but fresh webs may return if food and shelter remain available.

Most spiders around a home are a nuisance rather than a serious threat. House and cellar spiders often build webs, while wolf spiders hunt without a capture web. Black widows and suspected brown recluses need careful identification. Color alone cannot tell you which spider you have.

WOLF SPIDERS

Brown, hairy hunters may wander indoors while seeking insects; they do not build webs to catch prey.

BLACK WIDOW SPIDERS

Dark, sheltered spaces can conceal black widows with tangled webs; avoid reaching into hidden areas.

Spider Treatment Starts With The Source Of Activity

We consider the spider species, where activity is occurring and the conditions around your building. A web-building spider beneath an eave presents a different problem from a wandering spider in a storage room. Interior and exterior treatment is tailored to the findings, with attention to sheltered areas, entry gaps and the insects spiders feed on. Tell your technician where you see fresh webs, repeated sightings or egg sacs, and share any products you have already applied.

IDENTIFY

Spider features and web patterns identify the species and help guide treatment around your property.

TRACE

Sheltered corners, stored items and entry openings reveal where spiders rest and locate insect prey.

TREATMENT

Targeted applications address spider activity according to the findings and conditions on your site.

PREVENT

Practical changes to clutter, lighting and openings help reduce the conditions that attract spiders.

Make Your Property Less Attractive To Spiders

Start with the places that offer shelter and insect prey. Clear storage away from walls, check weatherstripping and repair damaged window screens. Reduce unnecessary outdoor lighting where practical, since lights can draw flying insects toward doors and windows. Keep shrubs and stacked firewood away from the building.

Routine web removal helps you see where new activity develops. Use a vacuum or long-handled tool for reachable webs, and avoid putting bare hands into concealed spaces. Let Phoenix know if webs quickly return or you suspect a widow or recluse. A recurring problem may need closer inspection of the surrounding area.

FOOD STORAGE

Seal pantry staples and remove food residue from counters and cabinets.

EXTERIOR ACCESS

Prune branches touching the building and inspect gaps around utilities.

MOISTURE

Repair plumbing leaks and check damp areas beneath sinks or appliances.

WOOD AND DEBRIS

Move stacked wood away from walls and remove damp debris near the home.

STORED ITEMS

Reduce clutter and keep stored items in rigid bins away from the walls.

OUTDOOR LIGHTING

Limit unnecessary outdoor lighting that draws insects near entry doors.

ENTRY GAPS

Repair damaged screens and seal open gaps around doors and window trim.

YARD AND DEBRIS

Keep shrubs trimmed and move stacked firewood away from exterior walls.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT SPIDERS

  • Why am I seeing more spiders in my house?

Spiders may enter through small gaps or arrive on items brought indoors. Repeated sightings can also reflect available insects, sheltered storage or an indoor population. Note where and when you see them. That pattern helps distinguish occasional visitors from activity that needs a closer inspection.

  • Are all brown spiders brown recluses?

No. Wolf spiders, house spiders and several other kinds are often mistaken for brown recluses. Brown color or a vaguely violin-shaped mark is not enough for identification. Recluses have six eyes in three pairs and plain, unbanded legs. Avoid handling a suspected recluse and ask for identification.

  • Does removing spiderwebs solve the problem?

Removing webs and reachable egg sacs can reduce visible activity and make new webs easier to notice. It does not correct entry gaps, sheltered hiding places or an insect food source. Some spiders hunt without capture webs, so an absence of webs does not rule out spider activity.

  • How long does spider treatment take to work?

The timeline depends on the species, where spiders are hiding and the service used. Fresh activity can continue if additional spiders enter or sheltered areas remain untreated. Follow Phoenix's service instructions and report where spiders or new webs continue to appear so the response can be evaluated.

  • What should I do before service if I have pets or children?

Not necessarily. Carpenter ants may forage indoors while nesting outside. Persistent activity, coarse wood debris or ants emerging from wood warrants closer inspection. These ants can excavate wood for nests, especially where moisture is present. Finding ants alone does not establish the location or extent of any damage.

  • How much does spider control cost?

The property, type of spider activity and recommended service affect the cost. Call 865-455-8571 or use the contact form with your location and a description of the problem. Ask which areas the proposed service covers, what follow-up is included and whether ongoing care is recommended.
